The Benefits of Yoga Practice

In the modern world, stress has become an integral part. Deadlines, goals, objectives, Board meetings, presentations have made us live on the edge of a mental breakdown. We witness cases of suicides and mental illnesses every day. In fact, every Indian knows someone who has committed suicide or suffers from depression or acute work pressure. Combating such pressure takes intensive care and regular work. Add to this lifestyle bad food habits, viz. junk food, alcoholic drinks, street food, fruits treated with chemicals for a longer shelf life or GMO food, we have a recipe for a unhealthy human.

If the above criteria is a description of your life, let me remind you that you are looking at a future ridden with health issues. Think of chronic illnesses and diseases like high blood pressure, obesity, arthritis, cholesterol, diabetes, etc. Let me warn you that a lifestyle such as the above is a sure-shot way of increasing your dependence on medications.

Why I am painting such a drab picture is because I find that half the nation’s youth is already combating diseases caused due to stress and/or unhealthy lifestyle.
The first step to lead a healthy life is to control your eating urges. Focus on what you put inside your body and be strict with your nagging desires. For step 1, choose to cut off deep fried food from your diet and if you must have it, make it at home. Street vendors refry food using oil that has been already used at least once. The samosa you are eyeing has nothing good to offer you, at home it’ll at least be clean and give you some nutrition, apart from taking out the joy by piling up dishes to clean. This should keep you away from wanting to fill in on fried food. For step 2, choose veggies that are colourful. Beet, carrots, tomatoes, baby spinach, corn, pick whatever catches your eye, steam them or just have them raw as a snack. For step 3, formulate a work-out regime. See, to keep your body agile and flexible you need to keep it moving. So, join Zumba, or a karate class, or do what I do: learn Yoga.

The best thing about learning Yoga is that it needs no gym-registration fees or workout gear. Additionally, you can practice it just about anywhere and you get to decide how long your work-out shall be. This means stretching it longer or cutting it shorter according to the time availability. Initially though, it’s advisable to join a Yoga class and learn the proper posture for each asana from an expert. But once you’re clear with the basics you can practice it right next to your bed. I recommend this cool Yoga School that I found in Rishikesh that offers a lot of options for you to learn Yoga. The instructors are all experienced and immediately understand the weaknesses of your body and recommend asanas that would strengthen you from within.

It, in fact, has been intensely calming and fulfilling to follow the practice of Yoga. Try it, maybe?
